Place Value
という数は、 と と がただ並んでいるだけではありません。おなじ「」でも、おく場所（位）によって意味が変わります。位取りがわかると、大きな数も読めて、くらべられるようになります。
The number is not just the digits , , and in a row. The same digit can mean different amounts depending on where it sits. Once you understand place value, you can read big numbers and compare them.
Ones, Tens, and Hundreds
右から順に、一の位（ones）、十の位（tens）、百の位（hundreds）とよびます。一の位はそのままの数、十の位は のかたまり、百の位は のかたまりを表します。たとえば が十の位にあれば 、百の位にあれば という意味です。
Reading from the right, we have the ones, the tens, and the hundreds. The ones place is just that many; the tens place counts groups of ; the hundreds place counts groups of . So a in the tens place means , and a in the hundreds place means .
What Each Digit Means
を位ごとに分けると、 は百の位なので 、 は十の位なので 、 は一の位なので です。たすと にもどります。このように数を位ごとに分けることを「位ごとに分ける（分解する）」といいます。
If we split by place, the is in the hundreds, so it means ; the is in the tens, so it means ; and the is in the ones, so it means . Adding them back gives . Breaking a number up like this is called expanding it by place value.
Comparing Numbers by Place Value
数をくらべるときは、いちばん大きい位から見ます。 と では、百の位が と 。 なので のほうが大きいです。百の位が同じときは、十の位、それも同じなら一の位とすすみます。
To compare numbers, look at the biggest place first. For and , the hundreds digits are and . Since , we know is larger. If the hundreds are the same, move on to the tens, and then to the ones.
