Area & Perimeter
形のまわりの長さを「周の長さ」、形がしめる広さを「面積」といいます。この2つはにているようで、ちがうものです。ここでは長方形を使って、周の長さと面積のもとめ方、そして正しい単位の使い方を学びます。
The distance all the way around a shape is its perimeter; the amount of flat space it covers is its area. They sound similar but they are different. Using rectangles, we learn how to find each one and which units to use.
Perimeter
周の長さは、形のまわりを1周したときの長さの合計です。すべての辺の長さをたせばもとめられます。長方形には、たて2本とよこ2本の辺があります。だから、たてとよこをたして2ばいすればはやく計算できます。
The perimeter is the total distance once around the outside of a shape. You find it by adding the lengths of all the sides. A rectangle has two long sides and two short sides, so a quick way is to add the length and width, then double it.
Area of a rectangle
面積は、形がしめる広さのことです。長方形の面積は、たて×よこでもとめられます。なぜかというと、1辺1cmの正方形（1cm）が、たてに何こ・よこに何こ ならぶかを数えているからです。だから単位は cm（平方センチメートル）になります。
Area is how much flat space a shape covers. For a rectangle, area is length times width. This is because you are counting how many 1 cm squares (each 1 cm) fit along and down the rectangle. That is why the unit is cm (square centimetres).
Counting squares and using units
方眼の上にかかれた形なら、中のマスを数えるだけで面積がわかります。1マスが1cmなら、マスの数がそのまま面積（cm）です。大切なのは単位です。周の長さは「長さ」なので cm、面積は「広さ」なので cm を使います。この2つをまちがえないようにしましょう。
If a shape is drawn on grid paper, you can find its area just by counting the squares inside. If each square is 1 cm, the number of squares is the area in cm. Units matter. Perimeter is a length, so it uses cm. Area is a space, so it uses cm. Be careful not to mix them up.
