Lower Secondary course details
Who this is for
For children in Year 7–9 (Japanese grades 7–9). The course looks ahead to IGCSE and, for families returning to Japan, to high-school entrance exams there.
- Students following Cambridge Lower Secondary or Japanese-style lower-secondary maths
- Students who want to secure their maths foundations before IGCSE
- Students who want to get used to English maths terms and the instruction words used in questions
Goals
Students learn lower-secondary maths systematically and build the written-answer skills that carry into IGCSE and, after a return to Japan, high-school entrance exams.
- Fill any gaps, from directed numbers to quadratic functions and geometric proof
- A bridge to IGCSE Mathematics and Additional Mathematics
- Learn to read English questions accurately and show their reasoning in their answers
Lesson format
One-to-one online lessons of 60 or 90 minutes, four a month, with plans taught in Japanese or in Full English.
- English materials, explained in Japanese: we work from English materials, terms and questions and explain them clearly in Japanese
- Full English: the whole lesson is taught in English
- Monthly online parent meeting and written report
How a lesson runs
Lessons run in this order: homework corrections → a new unit → practice on English questions → checking the school's pace and the homework.
- For wrong answers, we go back to where the judgement went wrong
- From definitions to worked examples, setting out the method clearly
- Terms and Command Words checked side by side in Japanese and English
- Revision and working ahead are balanced to the school's pace and test range

We use our own bilingual Year 7–9 textbooks, topic worksheets, check tests and predicted papers for each school.
- Units arranged to suit Cambridge Lower Secondary, MYP or the Japanese curriculum
- Weekly practice worksheets matched to the student's progress and weak points
