Quadratic Equations

$a x^{2} + b x + c = 0$ （ただし $a \neq = 0$ ）の形の方程式を二次方程式といいます。解き方は主に「因数分解」と「解の公式」の2つです。

An equation of the form $a x^{2} + b x + c = 0$ (with $a \neq = 0$ ) is a quadratic equation. The two main methods of solving are factorising and the quadratic formula.

因数分解で解く

Solving by factorising

左辺を $(x - p) (x - q) = 0$ の形に因数分解できれば、 $x = p$ または $x = q$ が解です。積が $0$ になるのは、どちらかが $0$ のときだからです。

If the left side factorises as $(x - p) (x - q) = 0$ , then the solutions are $x = p$ or $x = q$ , because a product is zero only when one of the factors is zero.

The quadratic formula

因数分解できないときは、解の公式を使います。 $b^{2} - 4 a c$ を判別式といい、これが正なら解は2つ、 $0$ なら重解、負なら実数解なしです。

When it does not factorise, use the quadratic formula. The expression $b^{2} - 4 a c$ is the discriminant: positive gives two roots, zero gives a repeated root, negative gives no real roots.

x = \frac{- b \pm b ^{2} - 4 a c}{2 a}

因数分解で解く

Solving by factorising
